My first solo exhibition at Gallerysmith in Melbourne will feature a series of paintings and sculptural objects that explore artifacts as a way of examining our relationship with technology.

An artifact is a purposeful human made object, that is often of historical or scientific interest. In contrast it can also be something that is created by a method or technology as a pattern, feature or error like digital image compression artifacts. These contrasting meanings contradict each other and reflect the anxiety, our dependency and the uncanniness of digital technologies.

Using techniques and concepts found in Intermedia, each piece combines conventionally opposing mediums, objects and ideas. Caught between human, digital and machine made, the oscillation of meanings and mediums create unexplained, unrecognisable, immaterial and sometimes a little bit weird artifacts.
